How to Configure Jitsi

Jitsi (previously SIP Communicator) is an audio/video and chat communicator that supports protocols such as SIP, XMPP/Jabber, AIM/ICQ, Windows Live, Yahoo!, Bonjour and many other useful features. It works on Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux.

Step 1:Download and Install Jitsi

You can download the latest versions here: http://jitsi.org/index.php/Main/Download. Select your OS and then the latest .dmg file for download.

Jitsi can be set to automatically update.

To provision this softphone, you will need your SIP account credentials, which you will find in the email you received when you signed up.

Step 2:Configuring your SIP Account - Part 1

Open up Jitsi. You should see a screen that has fields for a variety of services. You can enter in the XMPP/Chat credentials into the fields designated 'Jabber' to set that up immediately. Click 'Sign in'. To set up your SIP account, you will have to select the Jitsi menu item from the top navigation bar > Preferences > Accounts.

Select the ‘Add’ button at the bottom of this screen.

You will see a drop down menu labeled ‘Network’.

Select SIP and hit the ‘advanced’ button at the lower left hand corner of the screen when you are able to.

Under the Account tab, enter the following information:

Account

  • SIP id > SIP address
  • Password > SIP Password
  • Display Name > Whatever You Would Like

Step 2:Configuring your SIP Account - Part 2

Under the Connection tab, enter the following information

  • Registrar > Domain; Port is 5060
  • Authorization Name > Authentication Username
  • Configure proxy Automatically > ensure this is NOT SELECTED
  • Proxy > Outbound Proxy ; Port is 5060
  • Enable support to encrypt calls > ensure this is NOT SELECTED

Select Next and then Sign In.

You will now be able to make and receive calls through using your SIP account.

Step 3:Setting up XMPP / Chat

You should still be at Accounts.

At the bottom of the screen, click "Add".

You'll be given a Network drop down menu.

Select "Jabber" from the drop down.

Once more, select "Advanced".

Under the Account tab, enter the following information:

Account

  • Jabber Username > XMPP Username
  • Password > XMPP password

Under the "Presence" tab, un-check the following:

  • Use ICE
  • Use UPnP
